The Companion Animals in Your Community?

I think there are three options:

  1. Those causing the problems: those with unaltered animals, those who let their animals wander, those who shouldn’t have animals
  2. The city/county:taxpayers…everyone pays a little into the system to cover the cost
  3. Animal Advocates in the community: the non-profit group focused on helping local dogs and cats

If we choose #1 Those Causing the Problem we are leaving the care and well-being of the animals in the hands of uneducated and in some cases uncaring individuals. If we were talking about who should be responsible for cleaning up their trash I would recommend the people causing the problem but when we’re talking about living beings who can suffer, I’d argue this is really not an option.

Should the taxpayers be responsible? In many cases they already are. Animal Control or Protection is a government entity. These individuals are responsible for a multitude of tasks that focus around protecting the community from potentially dangerous pets and protecting pets from potentially dangerous members of the community.

But what then? Once the laws have been enforced many animals end up in the care of Animal Control…should taxpayers then pay to continue housing the animals? Should they provide enrichment activities or cover the medical or behavioral costs associated with an animal – should that happen if the animal is 14 years old?

If you’re reading this blog your answer is probably “Yes!” but consider this. Many hospitals are run by city or municipality oversight. Would we as taxpayers who fund the hospital – to ensure everyone has a chance at basic medical care – be supportive if the hospital started helping people who already had strong insurance? Or who wanted care that was over and above basic lifesaving?

Taxpayers in the community who don’t feel for animals as we do can make the argument that Basic Humane Care & Disposition of Community Animals is all that the government run entity should be responsible for.
